The first wave of new Hudson Group stores are now opening at Lambert. The first one opened this week. It’s the flagship Hudson travel and convenience store located in the C Concourse near gate C18. It offers newspapers, magazines, snacks and travel technology items. The store design features an entryway framed in black with the light blue Hudson logo. Inside, bright color panels at the top sit over store shelves. A total of five Hudson stores will eventually be built in the Airport’s terminals and concourses. Construction on the entire Hudson lineup of 14 store locations will continue through mid-summer. As early as next week, Hudson could open another four specialty stores including a Discover St. Louis boutique where travelers can find gift and memento items from top area tourist attractions.
The new Starbucks in Terminal 1.
St. Louis Starbucks fanatics can celebrate this weekend. The Terminal 1 Starbucks has reopened after several months of renovations. Regulars, and there are lots of Airport regulars, will instantly notice the new modern design with more seating and leather chairs. The location has expanded counters. The design also includes cafe style seating with some backgammon tables. This completes the renovations of Starbucks at Lambert. There are six locations in all.
It’s been 60 years since
St. Louis had two major league baseball teams. With this year’s opening day for
the St. Louis Cardinals around the corner, Lambert-St. Louis International
Airport is featuring a historical exhibit on St. Louis’ other team, the St.
Louis Browns. The St. Louis Browns
Historical Society has installed an exhibit in the Terminal 1 Baggage Claim
featuring more than 200 photos, two jerseys (Home & Road) and other memorabilia.
The exhibit runs through June 2013. St. Louis was recently recognized by the
Bleacher Report as being the Best Baseball city in the U. S. according to Fan
Club president Bill Rogers. Rogers plans an annual celebration of the St. Louis Browns which includes former players and fans. For more information, you can log onto www.thestlbrowns.com.
Now is your chance to
brush up on your American League history (home of the Browns) in St. Louis. The
Browns started out as the Milwaukee Brewers. In 1902 they came to St. Louis and
took the former name of the St. Louis Cardinals, the Brown Stockings (because
of the colors they wore).
The first year in St.
Louis, the Browns finished in second place with a record of 78- 58. After that,
they never placed higher than fourth until 1922, when they placed second behind
the Yankees by one game. They were back to their losing ways until 1944, when
they went to the World Series against the in-town rivals St. Louis Cardinals.
The Browns lost the series 4-2.
In 1951, they signed Satchel
Paige, a Negro League star, yet they still saw no improvement. The Browns signed
what is still to this day the smallest player in MLB history in 3’ 7” 65-pound
Eddie Gaedel who sported the number 1/8. In 1955
the Browns sold Sportsman Park to the Cardinals after the Busch family bought the
Redbirds. The Browns were then sold to
Baltimore where they have played ever since as the Orioles.
On September 28th
1953, before a sparse crowd of 3,174 the Browns played their last game in St.

While airlines have cancelled roughly 20 percent of the day's total number of scheduled arriving and departing flights, the airfield at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is open and operational. Crews are actively clearing and treating runways, taxiways, ramp areas as well as the public areas and roadwasy in front of Lambert's terminals.
The predicted winter storm is now hitting the St. Louis metro region.

Lambert-St. Louis International Airport recorded an upswing in passenger traffic for the first month of 2013 with an increase of 2.3 percent in enplanements (departing passengers). In the year over year look, Lambert boarded 448,330 passengers versus 438,049 passengers in January 2012. The overall look at passenger activity in January, both departing and arriving passengers, showed an increase of 17,406 passengers or two percent. The latest passenger numbers continues the upward momentum from 2012 where Lambert served more than 12.7 million total passengers, a year over year increase of 1 percent.
Commercial aircraft departures held steady in January at 6,978 compared to one year ago with 6,964. Total cargo weight of mail and freight increased 18 percent in January versus January 2012. Cargo carriers and commercial airlines carried 13.2 million pounds of cargo in January compared to 11.2 million in 2012.
Lambert operates nearly 250 average daily departures to 62 non-stop destinations. Southwest Airlines is the leading airline measured by total enplaned passengers with a 48 percent market share. American Airlines flew 16 percent of Lambert passengers in January; Delta Airlines flew 13 percent.
Airport Terminal Services also Unveils New Blending Process for Kilfrost DFSustain
Lambert-St. Louis International Airport (STL) is the first in the United States to use a new bio-based de-icing fluid that is more environmentally friendly and more cost effective for commercial carriers. Airport Terminal Services (ATS) began using Kilfrost DFSustain Type 1 bio-propanediol for its de-icing operations earlier this month. ATS, based in St. Louis, serves several major airlines at Lambert and other airports across North America. ATS currently de-ices approximately 30 percent of STL commercial aircraft traffic.
DFSustain is derived from a renewable and sustainable source that produces less greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fossil-fuel based de-icing fluids, such as ethylene and propylene glycols. DFSustain is currently in use by major international carriers such as All Nippon Airways, Air New Zealand and LATAM airlines.
“ATS wanted to support the Airport’s sustainability initiative and be an active green member of the community,” said Brian Wood, ATS Vice President of Operations & Customer Service. “We have the ability to now blend the deicing fluid specific to the local weather conditions, mitigating the impact to the environment, while using a more bio-friendly product.”
ATS installed a new Type 1 Glycol Blending System at Lambert which is manufactured by Liquid Automation Systems. The system allows for ATS crews to customize the de-icing mix on site based on weather conditions. This has the potential to reduce material costs which in turn can reduce the environmental impact associated with aircraft de-icing operations. Lambert is the 4th ATS location where the new de-icing blending system has been installed. Other Airports include Edmonton, Calgary and Moncton.
“The next generation de-icing fluid and the new de-icing blending system are perfect examples of the types of iniatives we are encouraging of all of our Airport partners to undertake as we accelerate our sustainability program at Lambert,” said Lambert Director, Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge. “We hope and anticipate that this type of operation will grow at Lambert and be adopted at other airports in the U.S.”
Lambert’s sustainability program crosses all operational platforms with a commitment to integrate economic, social and environmental aspects into new projects, existing operations and management strategies while providing a quality service to the St. Louis region.
Lambert has been a regional leader in the use of alternative fuels for more than two decades. More than 50 percent of the Airport’s fleet and operations vehicles run on alternative fuels (Compressed Natural Gas & Bio-Diesel). The first public CNG fueling station in the region will soon be built on Airport property. Most recently, the Airport introduced electric work vehicles into its fleet and offers free electric charging stations at its public parking lot operation, Super Park. Lambert also introduced food composting in Airport restaurants in 2012.
