Starting this week, Lambert will begin major infrastructure improvements between exits 14, 15 and 16 in the ramp area that connects Bag Claim and the Yellow Level of the Terminal 1 Garage. Work includes new ceilings, HVAC, lighting and the addition of new wall finishes. Airline baggage service offices in this area are being relocated to temporary facilities directly adjacent to baggage carousels during the construction, which will be completed this fall. At least two of three doorways will be open at all times during the construction.
The second project will overhaul two lower level entrances that connect Bag Claim with Arrivals Drive, the roadway for passenger pickup and most ground transportation shuttles. These covered walkway entrances were damaged during the April 22, 2011 tornado. Lambert will be building new sleek, all-glass enclosed walkways that will better enhance Lambert’s historic terminal architecture. The project is being funded with support from the Eastman Chemical Company, as well as insurance proceeds. The glass panels will allow natural lighting to brighten the pathway for the public to and from the lower level Bag Claim. Eastman’s Saflex® and Vanceva® interlayers bring safety, security and UV protection to the laminated glass. LLumar® decorative window films provide a distinct design pattern to the enclosed walkways. Entry/Exit 17 will be closed beginning the first week of February for construction. This phase of the project should be completed in April. Construction on Entry/Exit 12 will proceed after the first phase of the project is completed. Alternate doorways will be used for passengers and visitors to enter and exit the terminal during this construction.
These projects will complement the major interior renovation nearing completion in the Airport’s Terminal 1 Bag Claim and the lower level. The Airport Experience renovations include new ceilings, new lighting, new interior wall and flooring surfaces, new signage, new directories and new restrooms. The Airport Experience renovation on the Ticketing Lobby, including new ticket counters and new terrazzo flooring, will be completed by this summer.
The retail shopping scene at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport will get a dramatic makeover beginning this week. HG-St. Louis JV, a joint venture of premier travel retailer Hudson Group, will formally begin its 10-year contract with Lambert on February 1 for the Airport’s news, gift and specialty retail concessions. Hudson will reopen a majority of the existing retail locations currently operated by The Paradies Shops. Over the next five months, Hudson will build out 13 locations featuring top national brands and exclusive local concepts as well.
During the 5-month build-out, Hudson will operate some temporary store units which will feature core news and gift merchandise offered through its flagship Hudson store. Hudson will offer its full mix of merchandise once it opens all of its new stores by late June 2013. Here is the current store lineup for Lambert:

HG-St. Louis JV is a joint venture comprised of Hudson Group (HG) Retail, LLC; Final Phase Marketing, Inc., based in St. Louis; OHM Concession Group, LLC of St. Ann, Missouri; and Newburns Management Group, LLC. Final Phase Marketing, OHM Concession Group and Newburns Management Group are certified ACDBE companies. The agreement, which also carries a three-year option, guarantees Lambert a minimum of $13 million in the first three years of the contract and $41 million over the full term of the contract. The company will employ more than 100 people. More than 90 employees are current retail employees of The Paradies Shops.

(St. Louis) Lambert-St. Louis International Airport was awarded a Circle of Excellence Award of Merit in the 2012 St. Louis RCGA Green Business Challenge which promotes sustainability strategies in the region. Lambert was a first year participant and one of a few organizations honored with the greatest gain in new sustainable practices or strategies over the duration of the six month competition. The Green Business Challenge was sponsored by the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association.
Lambert pursued an aggressive campaign to set new standards for its sustainability program with goals and guidance set out by the competition as well as its own unique programs.
· Created a “Green Team” to guide Airport-wide audit and implement 11 new sustainability practices
· Implemented pilot programs for food waste composting and green cleaning services
· Increased energy efficiency with installation of 200 occupancy sensors, LED lighting and new HVAC systems
· Improved waste generation reduction and recycling policies
· Increased water conservation by installing low flow sanitary system
The Airport also continued to achieve in areas of sustainability leadership:
· Expanded fleet of alternative fuels vehicles with more than half operating on compressed natural gas or bio-fuels
· Opened second free waiting zone/cell phone lot for public to reduce traffic congestion and vehicle carbon emissions
· Installed five electric vehicle charging stations for public at Airport parking lot
· Increased construction waste recycling requirement for all projects
As the primary commercial service Airport for the St. Louis region, Lambert operates more than 1.4 million sq. feet of building space through its terminals, concourses, offices and other airfield support buildings. Lambert, owned and operated by the City of St. Louis, manages approximately 180 tenants. Lambert served nearly 13 million passengers in 2011 and is the 31st busiest airport in the United States as ranked by the Airports Council International. Lambert-St. Louis International Airport has reached another major milestone in its $70 million Airport Experience Program. The Airport has completed renovations and reopened the final set of restrooms in Terminal 1 to meet the demand of the Christmas holiday travel rush.
The renovated restrooms are located in the lower level of Terminal 1 near the entrance to the A Concourse security checkpoint. The Men’s, Women’s and Family Assist restrooms feature bright white counters, colorful tile wall surfaces, new lighting, new stalls and new plumbing fixtures. Restroom features are all ADA compliant. Because of the restrooms’ location to the USO, the Airport also added additional mirrors, seating and hooks to accommodate military personnel who often need to make uniform changes at the Airport.
In the last 18 months, Lambert has renovated nine sets of restrooms in Terminal 1 and Concourses A & C. The Airport also built a new set of restrooms in Terminal 1 Bag Claim to provide closer facilities for passengers exiting the C Concourse.
“For our passengers and our employees, the complete makeover of our restrooms is one of the most important projects in this entire campaign,” said Lambert Director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge.
In other Airport Experience news, the Airport has also completed a new entertainment stage in the lower level of Terminal 1 directly across from Starbucks and The Pasta House restaurants. The stage will be used for various events and performances. The Airport’s annual holiday choir performances, sponsored by the St. Louis Christmas Carols Association, are now being staged at this new location. Performances are scheduled through December 21. The stage space is enhanced by a new atrium that opens to the upper level Ticketing Lobby in Terminal 1.
The renovations to the lower level are now more than 90 percent complete. Higher, brighter ceilings along with new circular lighting have transformed the lower level and Bag Claim into a more welcoming space. The Airport is continuing its work in phases on the upper level with new ticket counters and new terrazzo flooring. The Airport Experience Program is scheduled to be completed in 2013.
A Chevy Volt is the first vehicle to be hooked up to the Airport’s new electric charging stations at Super Park Lot A.
Lambert-St. Louis International Airport has launched a new service that caters to those who fuel up with a plug versus a gasoline nozzle. Lambert is now offering free charging for electric vehicles at the Airport’s Super Park Lot A, which is directly across from Terminal 1. There are five charging stations available-offered first come, first serve. Super Park offers quick and convenient shuttle service to both terminals. The new service was installed to meet the growing trend in electrical vehicles in the region. The Airport is plugging in, too. Lambert has purchased four GEM electric vehicles, which will be used for parking lot patrols and light maintenance operations.
Electric vehicle owners can now park at Super Park Lot A, directly across from Terminal 1, and get a free charge during the stay. The Airport has also purchased four compact GEM electric vehicles for its Super Park operations, which includes two terminal garages and four long-term lots.

“When the tornados hit our region last spring, we knew we wanted to bring increased safety to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport,” said Eric Nichols, vice president and general manager of Eastman’s advanced interlayers product lines. “Saflex® PVB interlayers for laminated glass and Eastman’s performance films’ Llumar® post applied decorative window films bring both safety and UV protection to the pedestrian walkway project at the main terminal. Our products are used in airport applications around the world, and we are happy these products will welcome visitors to the St. Louis region through our “gateway,” Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.”
Eastman’s Saflex® interlayers were also used in the replacement glass for the Terminal 1 vaulted curtain walls on the upper level, which were also heavily damaged during the 2011 tornado. The Terminal Entrances Project was designed by exp. US Services. C. Rallo Contracting is the prime contractor for the project.
The Terminal Entrances reconstruction is part of the overall tornado restoration campaign by the Airport totaling approximately $22 million. The Airport is also in the final months of its $70 million Airport Experience Program, which will be the largest interior renovation of Terminal 1 (built1956) and its concourses when it’s completed in 2013. Improvements include renovated restrooms, higher ceilings, new lighting, new interior wall and flooring surfaces, new wayfinding signage and digital directories.
