Case Closed: Lambert Photo of the Week

The Lambert Gallery, which is adjacent to the Terminal 1 bag claim and next to the C Concourse exit, is a unique art space in the airport. Six large display cases, called vitrines, showcase rotating art exhibitions year-round. Makers: Past + Present is the newest exhibition at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, which highlights selected works by dedicated makers who have participated in the Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design residency program.  The artists’ works are created in one of four media: clay, fiber, metal, or wood. The exhibition, which runs through May 2017, is part of the Lambert Art and Culture Program and is supported by the Regional Arts Commission.  Installing and removing these exhibitions is fragile work, requiring many skilled hands and specialized equipment. 

Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design Opens New Airport Exhibition

Makers: Past + Present is the newest exhibition at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport which highlights selected works by dedicated makers who have participated in the Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design residency program.  The St. Louis non-profit art center’s exhibition is located in the Lambert Gallery, adjacent to the Concourse C exit in the Terminal 1 Bag Claim.

The exhibition features the works of 20 artists who have participated in the residency program between 2008 and 2017. The artists’ works are created in one of four media:  clay, fiber, metal, or wood. The exhibition, which runs through May 2017, is part of the Lambert Art and Culture Program and is supported by the Regional Arts Commission.

The Craft Alliance Artists-in-Residence program gives the general public and students in Craft Alliance’s outreach and education programs the rare opportunity to learn about the processes involved in creating studio craft. Each year, Craft Alliance hosts three resident artists, with each residency lasting 6 to 12 months.   With private studios adjacent to our classrooms, each resident teaches in our programs, and becomes a part of the Craft Alliance community.

Established in 2008, the Artists-in-Residence program encourages emerging and mid-career artists by providing them with work space free of charge, access to Craft Alliance’s audiences, a modest stipend, and opportunities to exhibit and sell their work. Artists-in-Residence gain teaching experience in our education program, working with Craft Alliance’s Director of Education to design classes in their media, and collaborating with the Community Outreach Manager to craft studio experiences for school groups that visit Craft Alliance throughout the year. Artists-in-Residence also work closely with Craft Alliance’s exhibitions director to present an annual exhibition of work created during their residencies.

Snow Movers: Lambert Photo of the Week

The first snowfall of 2017 arrived at Lambert on Thursday with a dry, powdery accumulation that made for some blustery views from the  terminal windows.  Hundreds of people and machines went to work hours before the anticipated snowfall, and continued throughout the entire storm system, clearing the airfield and maintaining safe runway conditions.  The airport’s newest piece of snow removal equipment is the groundbreaking MB-5, which plows, brushes and distributes liquid deicer in one giant machine. In fact, Lambert was the first airport in the country to own one.   More than 20 pieces of airport snow removal equipment worked at a time, comprising four teams that maneuvered in skilled formation.  Each winter storm is battled according to its unique conditions.  For this weather event, the snow was so dry that few deicing methods were needed. 

Southwest Airlines adds St. Louis to Charleston, SC for Summer 2017 Schedule

Lambert's airlines increasing flights and seat capacity this summer

Southwest Airlines released its 2017 summer flight schedule that will deliver to St. Louis four additional daily flights to current destinations and new Sat/Sun service to a new destination, Charleston, SC (CHS). The airline’s schedule for Lambert-St. Louis International Airport beginning June 4, 2017 will peak at 108 departures a day.

Southwest will be adding one daily additional non-stop flight this summer to four current destinations from STL: Boston (BOS), Cleveland (CLE), Nashville (BNA) and San Diego (SAN). The additional flights to Cleveland and Nashville will continue beyond the summer schedule.

The Airport and Southwest Airlines are now working together on a plan to continue modernizing and enhancing Terminal 2 that accommodates the carrier's expanded flight activity. In 2016, Southwest expanded operations with new gates at E31 and E33.

Several airlines serving St. Louis are projected to increase activity in 2017 versus last year. On peak days, Lambert’s airlines will operate more than 250 daily flights this upcoming summer. Additionally, the airlines continue to add seat capacity, with the use of larger aircraft. Seat capacity will grow 4.5 percent. In June, there will be more than 34,000 additional seats on departing flights versus one year ago (800,984 June 2017 vs 766,709 June 2016).

Afternoon Arrival: Lambert Photo of the Week

As the sun sets on 2016, we reflect on this excellent year for Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.  We saw a significant increase in passengers, with growth trending 10% over last year.   Southwest Airlines grew their STL operations, with a major gate expansion in Terminal 2 and reaching a milestone of over 100 flights a day.  Global Entry enrollment arrived at Lambert this year, as did Service Animal Relief Areas in each concourse. Pizza Studio restaurant and the Stella Artois bar also opened. The Lambert Art and Culture Program curated 12 new exhibitions to brighten the terminals, along with a live spring music series. Lambert was awarded a Missouri Governor’s Leader in Energy Award, and the Discovery Channel filmed a documentary highlighting our use of Biodiesel that will air next year. The picturesque MD-80 in this photo will be an increasingly rare sight at STL, and throughout the country, as American announced this year that it has begun retiring its iconic fleet.

Home for the Holidays: Lambert Photo of the Week

It was a sea of green inside Lambert-St. Louis International Airport on Wednesday, as nearly 5,000 military men and women in uniform departed home for the holidays. Beginning as early as midnight, service men and women arrived in bus loads from Fort Leonard Wood, and were seen entertaining themselves or catching a nap in seemingly every spare corner of the airport while waiting to board their flights.  The USO of Missouri made it a full celebration, sponsoring photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, among other festive activities.  Just as exciting as seeing the mass military exodus, was the joy and anticipation of loved ones waiting in the terminals to welcome their soldiers into their arms.

Innovative Artisan Pizzeria, Pizza Studio, Opens First Airport Location at Lambert

Pizza Studio, a nationwide franchise which specializes in customizable, made-to-order premium pizzas, opened today at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport’s A Concourse just in time for the holiday travel rush.   Lambert is Pizza Studio’s first airport location. HMSHost, who is adapting the restaurant concept for Lambert, says the chain’s value, quality, speed of service and brand makes it ideal for an airport setting.  

Pizza Studio is located across from gate A4 in Concourse A, from which Delta Airlines, United Airlines and Air Canada operate. 

This on-trend dining concept focuses on flavorful, chef-inspired creations from the dough up.  The crusts are baked in rosemary, whole grains, flaxseed, firecracker spice, gluten free, and traditional styles.  Saputo mozzarella, grated fresh in-store every morning, and a variety of vegetables and meat toppings, like nitrate-free pepperoni, complete each pie.  Each pizza starts out as a ball of buttery dough, which is flattened by a specialty press. The open kitchen design allows diners to watch their pizza being made, see the freshness and quality of the ingredients, and observe how carefully each pizza is prepared before it goes in the oven.  For those flying out early, Pizza Studio offers a breakfast menu from 7am-10am daily.

“We are excited Pizza Studio is joining our other great restaurants in the A Concourse,” said Airport Director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge. “I think our passengers will love the unique experience, and of course, how delicious the pizza is.”

Pizza Studio joins Mike Shannon’s, Budweiser Brew House, Dunkin’ Donuts/Baskin Robbins, and specialty burger restaurant, Grounded in St. Louis as dining options in the A Concourse. 

A Warm Welcome: Lambert Photo of the Week

Officer Craig Tudor is welcomed by friends, family and fellow Hazelwood Police upon his arrival in St. Louis Thursday.

In August, Hazlewood Police Officer Craig Tudor was severely injured responding to an emergency call when the squad car he was driving was struck by another vehicle in a head-on, rollover collision. After nearly losing his life,  Tudor was flown to Denver, CO in September to receive specialized treatment from Craig Hospital, a renowned rehabilitation center for spinal cord and brain trauma.  Just in time for Christmas, Tudor has recovered enough to return home to St. Louis.  Even through it was cold outside, there was a warm, and long awaited reunion inside with loved ones as he deplaned his Southwest Airlines flight.

A Cup of Cheer: Lambert Photo of the Week

A Starbucks barista makes a signature holiday drink for a military traveler.

The most wonderful time of the year is realized with lights, decorations, carols and Starbucks’ signature holiday drinks that fill the terminals with the warming aromas of gingerbread, pumpkin spice, cinnamon, peppermint and chai.  STL has six Starbucks locations, making it easy for travelers to grab a cup of holiday cheer and go.  In 2015, more than 1.4 million cups of coffee were served throught the year. The airport’s Instagram feed is filled daily with passengers posting photos of their beloved Starbucks drinks, which are arguably the most photographed items at Lambert. 

Fly By: Lambert Photo of the Week

A Southwest Airlines plane takes off from STL’s airfield as local business leaders gather in The Concourse for the St. Louis Green Business Challenge Annual Awards on Friday.

With panoramic airfield views, the backdrop for events is one-of-a-kind.  The St. Louis Green Business Challenge, a joint program of the St. Louis Regional Chamber and the Missouri Botanical Garden, hosted their annual awards celebration at Lambert on Friday.  So far, The Concourse has hosted four weddings, two runway fashion shows, two proms, and dozens of corporate and private events along with national conferences.
