Jewish musicians and singers from Song Leader Boot Camp gather around to play songs at St. Louis Lambert International Airport on February 18, 2020.
Singers and musicians convene in St. Louis every year for the Jewish music conference, Song Leader Boot Camp, hosted by the JCC in St. Louis. A few veterans of the conference have played their way into a tradition on departing day by gathering a group of friends (some of whom were strangers just days before) and holding an impromptu jam session around the piano at St. Louis Lambert International Airport. They discovered the “Play Me” piano moved from the ticketing level to the lower level in Terminal 1 since last year, but kept the tradition going this past week. They pulled out whatever instruments they had to share a small playlist of tunes showcasing their musical talents and get in one final performance in St. Louis. The piano player, Jacob “Milk” Sandler wrote to us about this picture: “That’s the spirit of Jewish music making--getting together and building community in song, listening louder than we sing, and elevating each other and those around us with the power of music.”
