Project hopes to ease congestion
ST. LOUIS (Nov. 19, 2020): St. Louis Lambert International Airport’s (STL) Terminal Two (T2) garage has a new entrance for drivers. The entrance will officially open on Friday, November 20. This entrance will allow westbound traffic from Lambert International Boulevard (LIB) off of I-70 to enter directly from LIB. This will ease the congestion often seen on Arrivals Drive. This entrance was part of a traffic improvement program that began this past Spring. It included the addition of a second lane on T2’s Arrivals Drive for use by both private and commercial traffic.
Southwest Airlines operates all of its arrivals and departures from T2 at STL. In recent years, T2 has seen a significant rise in passenger traffic and an increase in the demand for garage parking.
“This project from garage entrance to expanding T2’s Arrivals Drive is our investment to improve the passenger experience at STL,” said Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge, STL Director. “Southwest Airlines is committed to its continued growth at STL and this project is part of our efforts to help with this successful growth.”
On Tuesday, November 24, new curbside parking will become available on the arrival level of T2. The additional parking will be used by various airport shuttle operators. This will alleviate the overall congestion on T2’s Arrivals Drive. That same night, crews will begin placing new signage throughout T2 as well as on T2 roadways. Airport personnel will be on hand to help passengers during this changeover.
This work is one portion of a multi-phase project, originally part of a 2017 airport bond proposal. Further improvements funded by this bond will include another T2 garage entrance for eastbound LIB traffic without entering Arrivals Drive. In 2019, more than 9.5 million passengers utilized T2 or 60 percent of total STL passengers.
