The Confluence Tarot

The Confluence Tarot

by simiya sudduth

Exhibition Dates: May to November 2025

Location: Post-Security, Concourse West Wall

simiya sudduth’s ongoing tarot card-based illustration series: The Confluence Tarot explores the histories, cultures, systems, institutions, landscapes, and diverse living beings of the Mississippi River watershed: past, present, and future. The Mississippi River Valley, with its fertile soils and flowing waters, is both a source of life and a site of profound trauma. The Confluence Tarot, heavily inspired by the classic Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck, carries with it the complexities and contradictions of the Mississippi River—its ebb and flow; fertile abundance and decimation; and its powers of creation, destruction and resistance. The Confluence Tarot is an attempt to encapsulate these stories and the elements of resistance and resilience, creating a tool for liberation and reclaiming power in the face of exploitation. The artist states, “This work serves as an offering to the Land, Ancestors, and Beings within the spaces of the great Mississippi River.”
