Windows of Dress and Style. The Modern Classic Society, a historical society and fashion community founded by Dr. Lisa S. Thompson in 2017, presents a sampling of St. Louis women’s finest clothing, spanning a period from the1940s to 1990s. Exhibited here are fifty years of vintage womenswear, forgotten until rediscovered and revealed in a new time and place in fashion history. This private collection proudly and purposefully displays the fanfare of design, style, and exquisite taste of a diverse fashionable sector of women in St. Louis. Some of the most prominent department stores, specialty, and local boutiques, as well as exclusive and well-known designer labels and local designers are featured. Observers can only imagine who the women were, and the life stories expressed through their dress and style. They must have been modern and classic!
About the Artist: The Modern Classic Society
The Modern Classic Society’s vision is to ignite an awareness of fashion, history, and culture, featuring St. Louis women from all walks of life: past, present, and future. The mission is to further garner an appreciation of a viable historical costume collection through preservation, oral histories and research.
Founder Dr. Lisa S. Thompson is a fashion historian, independent researcher, educator, and curator who has spent her life surrounded by women who gave meaning to what it means to be “fashionable” both through the clothes they wore and the lives they lived. She is joined in her work by creative director, curator, and educator Helen Douglas-Taylor, whose earliest memory, at age three, is her mother making her a red dress from a curtain. Like Dr. Thompson, Mrs. Douglas-Taylor’s family was full of women who dressed to impress, sparking her love for clothes, beauty, creativity, and uniqueness.
The Modern Classic Society is proud to celebrate St. Louis women from all walks of life by displaying and expressing their history through fashion, dress, and style. The Modern Classic Society is a “Little Museum” highlighting fashion history by remembering the past, embracing the present and contributing to the future of fashion and style.
