Recent Work on Lindbergh Tunnel Will Produce Savings

New lights in Lindbergh Tunnel will reduce STL’s energy usage

ST. LOUIS (April 2, 2021): The recent in-house work by St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) to install new LED lights will have an immediate savings for the airport. Over the last four years, the average annual electricity used for lighting in the tunnel has been over 1.7 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy. The new lights will save the airport just over one-million kWh or about $76,000 a year.

Beginning in November of last year and running through last month, STL conducted lane closures over a period of four weeks. This allowed STL’s Electrical Shop Department to install new LED lighting in the Lindbergh Tunnel. To impact traffic as little as possible, crews worked from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. They replaced 1,252 lights through the entire structure which runs just over 1,400 feet in length.

Ameren Missouri, the largest electric power provider in Missouri, provided STL with a financial incentive of just over $82,600 through the company’s BizSaver program, specifically for this project. With the savings provided, the project’s cost will be paid back in less than six years (2027). The project continues STL’s efforts to reduce its daily energy footprint.
