Systematically developing the
Future of STL
The STL of tomorrow begins with a comprehensive understanding of the not only our physical resources, but also how the Airport fits into our shared environment and our communities both globally and locally.
The Airport Planning and Development Office strives to meet the needs of current and future passengers by engaging with the community to develop efficient solutions for the strategic development for the Airport of Tomorrow.

What Does Airport Planning Do?
- Airport Planning systematically evaluates the airport operations and environment from a holistic perspective. We identify the strengths and weaknesses and set future goals and metrics.
- Analyze current trends and plan for future capacity
- Engage with stakeholders to ensure compatibility within the local community, evaluate alternatives, and consider impacts.
- Recommend preferred alternatives, determine potential funding sources including grant funding, provide documentation, and assist with program drawing plans.
Planning Overview:
- St. Louis Lambert International Airport’s (STL) Master Plan (MP) serves as a critical planning tool that depicts both existing facilities and planned development for the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires airports to update their Master Plan every eight to ten years.
- Our current terminals are cramped and congested with outdated gates and limited concession space.
- The MP helps STL make informed decisions on potential development, be in the best possible position to address the ongoing needs of passengers, and continue to receive FAA project funding.
- The STL Master Plan is used as a guide in reviewing existing and future terminals along with airside and landside improvements to accommodate future passenger and air traffic needs through 2040.
