One way to multiply the production of a prime contractor—to effectively increase his capacity—is to spread the work. For example, at McDonnell, on one airplane contract alone, 70 percent of the work is spread among 50 subcontractors in 8 neighboring states. Such an arrangement not only speeds production, but also makes possible expanded production. At McDonnell, we have been privileged to work with the Army and Navy, and with a number of aircraft manufacturers on assignments involving specialized research. Detailed information concerning the results achieved by our engineers, is of military necessity, restricted. We can, however, mention a few among many projects brought to successful completion. Among these were: an aerodynamic research assignment on a well-known combat plane which has seen action in many engagements; a flutter research assignment on a giant plane being built by one of America’s largest aircraft manufacturers; the development of strong, lightweight plastic ammunition boxes; and the redesigning of gun turret parts to be produced with weight-saving plastic. We are prepared to carry out further research assignments—with particular reference to flutter research, and the development and use of plastics in many phases of aircraft design and manufacture. But considerations other than its charm governed our choice of Memphis as the site for additional aircraft manufacturing plant facilities. Favorable climatic conditions, accessibility of location, adequate supplies of labor, exceptionally good electric, gas, and water facilities, enlightened and progressive civic and community leadership—all these are factors which influenced the location of a McDonnell Plant at the Memphis Municipal Airport. Details concerning the type and performance of aircraft which will soon roll out on our runways—are of military necessity, restricted. But you may be sure that these aircraft will play an important role in hastening the day of victory for America and our Allies. That’s our job in Memphis, now. Text reads: Minutes Saved May Save a Lifetime During World War II, swift airborne ambulance service saved many hundreds of lives. For the tragic difference between life and death was all too frequently only a matter of minutes. In the near future, another type of airborne ambulance service may save many more lives—by rushing emergency cases from nearby towns, villages and outlying communities to city hospitals—by helicopter. The helicopter is almost ideally suited to the needs of such service. Its ability to land in small areas where no landing facilities exist—to take off and land gently without jars or bumps, to fly smoothly, to hover where necessary—make it highly efficient as an ambulance use in urban or isolated areas. Present surface ambulance service, even when screaming sirens loudly proclaim the right-of-way, cannot possibly match the helicopter for speed. And, when operated by professional pilots, helicopter ambulance service will be as safe as it is swift. For the delays and hazards of stoplights, street intersections and heavy traffic will be eliminated. At McDonnell, despite war’s end, we are continuing the development and production of advanced types of aircraft to serve our Armed Forces in helping to maintain peace and order in the world. And of interest to St. Louisans, is the fact that McDonnell has consolidated all operations in St. Louis; that as the result of wartime developments in jet propelled aircraft, helicopters, and other aircraft industry activities, our peacetime production program promises to maintain and to extend our current high employment level, which utilizes the services of several thousand of our skilled fellow citizens.
