A farewell to the retired airport police chief

ST. LOUIS, MO (December 8, 2023): The St. Louis community mourns the passing of Retired Airport Police Chief Col. Paul “Sonny” E. Mason II, who left an indelible mark on the St. Louis Lambert International Airport Police Department during his dedicated 27-year tenure from 1987 to 2014.

Chief Mason, a former military police officer, not only served the airport faithfully, but also played a crucial role as the personal security officer for the late St. Louis Rams owner, Georgia Frontiere. His leadership, commitment, and unwavering dedication to public safety were evident throughout his distinguished career.

Under Chief Mason’s guidance, the Police Department experienced significant growth, underwent mission expansion, and embraced modernization. One of his pivotal achievements was steering the department through the aftermath of 9/11, ensuring that STL was the first airport approved to reopen. His strategic leadership during this challenging period demonstrated his commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the traveling public.

Chief Mason’s impact extended far beyond his professional responsibilities. He was a respected figure within the community, earning the trust and admiration of those he served. Colleagues and community members alike remember him as a compassionate leader who prioritized the well-being of his team and the public.

In honor of Retired Chief Mason’s rich and impactful life, the community is invited to reflect on his achievements and contributions. The funeral for Chief Mason is today, December 8, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. He will be laid to rest with full military honors.
