STL remembers a visionary leader
Former Airport Director Col. Griggs leaves behind a legacy of transformation
ST. LOUIS, MO (December 5, 2023): St. Louis Lambert International Airport today mourns the passing of former Airport Director Col. Leonard Griggs Jr. after a long and illustrious career. Col. Griggs served as the airport director for more than 20 years, leaving an indelible mark on the airport and the community it serves. A memorial gathering for Griggs was held Tuesday.
During his tenure as Director of STL, Griggs spearheaded numerous transformative projects that have shaped the airport into what it is today. His visionary leadership and dedication to excellence impacted the aviation industry and the St. Louis community.
One of Griggs’ most notable achievements was constructing the 11-29 runway program, which has significantly enhanced the airport’s capacity and efficiency. Additionally, he oversaw the successful completion of gate additions, new concourses, and expansions to Terminal 2, further improving the airport’s infrastructure and passenger experience.
Col. Griggs will be remembered for his professional accomplishments and his unwavering commitment to the airport. He cared deeply about the well-being of the airport and worked tirelessly to ensure its success.
Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge, the current Airport Director, expressed her admiration for Col. Griggs’ transformative leadership, stating, “He cared greatly about this airport and his work transformed it. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of airport leaders.”
The STL community mourns the loss of Former Director Griggs and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. His legacy will forever be cherished, and his contributions to the airport and the St. Louis community will never be forgotten.
