Poetry in Wood

Poetry in Wood

by Michael Bauermeister

Exhibition Dates: May to November 2025

Location: Lower Level Baggage claim Windows

In a lifetime of making things out of wood Michael Bauermeister has settled on a vocabulary of forms and surfaces that tell the stories he wants to tell. The craft involved is second nature to him at this point and he lets the chiseled surfaces and carefully chosen finishes speak for themselves. The time spent making the work leaves plenty of opportunity for reflecting on what will come next and results in a contemplative experience for both the artist and viewer.

About the Artist: Michael Bauermeister

Michael Bauermeister is a sculptor working mostly in wood. An artist from a young age, he received a BFA in Sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1979. Using the skills he gained as a furniture builder he builds sculpture, vessels and wall hung panels that are carved, laminated and turned on the lathe. He is known for his innovative finishes using tinted lacquer, stain and metal leaf in combination with the carved texture to achieve patterns inspired by nature and the built environment. He works in a studio near Augusta, Missouri. His work is collected and exhibited widely and is included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art and Renwick Gallery, the Boston Museum of Fine Art and many others.
